Fading is normal over time but the longer you wait to repair ir the harder it will become to repair.

Fading is inevitable. Just depends on artist, type of ink they use and the care you give it. Avoiding too much sunlight during healing process, type of lotion, and the skills of artist play a major factor. I've had a rose on my arm for 15 years and just realized some fading. Definitely get a touch up to keep it fresh!

A fading tattoo means time to shape up or fixing with more work around it

This is true.. 5 years is little time. If your wearing shirts and in a sunny state, your likely to have had it damaged during healing process. Either that, or, your artist didn't go deep enough with ink. I've seen several like that. Hard to tell. Get it touched up before too late.

Too deep and its going to scar too much. Deep enough should be uncomfortable. Not deep enough will feel like vibration. Its hard to tell due to ppls tolerance to pain, but there should be some pain, some blood, and you should definitely feel it!

Yeah tattoos will last over a decade if the ink is really set deep

I have a few that are over a decade old and still look good. Some need a little touch up, but dang! Trying to find someone to touch them up is a pain in my Arse! Lol
